Organizing Your Move!

Smooth Moves: A Realtor's Guide to Organizing Your Move Like a Pro

Let’s face it—moving is one of life’s most overwhelming tasks. Between packing boxes, cleaning out closets, and keeping your sanity intact, it’s easy to feel buried before the moving truck even arrives. As a realtor who has helped thousands of clients transition from one home to the next, I’ve seen it all—and I’m here to share some of my best tried-and-true tips to help you move smarter, not harder.

1. Start with a Game Plan

Before you lift a single box, grab a notebook or open a moving app (like Sortly or MoveAdvisor). Create a moving timeline and checklist that includes:

  • Utility shutoff/start dates

  • Address change reminders

  • Donation and junk pick-up days

  • Packing goals (e.g., “kitchen by Friday”)

Trust me, a little planning now saves a lot of stress later.

2. Label Like a Boss

Don't just slap “Kitchen” on every box and call it a day. Go one step further:

  • Color-code by room using tape or stickers

  • Write a brief contents list (“Kitchen: Plates, Mugs, Blender”)

  • Add “unpack first” stars on your most essential boxes

Pro Tip: Label on the side of the box, not the top—so you can still see what it is when they’re stacked.

3. Declutter Ruthlessly

Moving is the perfect excuse to lighten your load. Use the “Three Box Method” in each room:

  • Keep

  • Donate

  • Trash

If you haven’t worn it, used it, or loved it in a year—let it go. Your new home deserves a fresh start.

4. Create a “First Night” Box

This should include all the essentials you’ll need in the first 24 hours:

  • Sheets & towels

  • Toilet paper

  • Cleaning wipes

  • Coffee maker & mugs

  • Chargers

  • Pet food

  • Snacks

Label it clearly and load it into your car—not the moving truck.

5. Clean as You Go

Nobody wants to circle back for a major cleaning spree after the truck pulls away. Keep a basic kit on hand (multi-surface cleaner, rags, vacuum, broom) and:

  • Wipe shelves after emptying

  • Dust baseboards

  • Patch small nail holes with spackle

Bonus: It’ll help your old home show better for closing or the next buyer.

6. Pack Smarter, Not Heavier

  • Use suitcases for books—they’re heavy and have wheels!

  • Line boxes with towels or linens to protect fragile items

  • Wrap dishes vertically like records for better protection

  • Don’t forget to tape screws/bolts to disassembled furniture in a labeled baggie

7. Stay in Communication

Whether it’s with your movers, your realtor, or your utility companies, staying in the loop is key. Confirm dates and times, and don't be afraid to ask questions. A great realtor (like me!) is always just a call away.

Final Thoughts:
Moving is never easy, but it can be organized and manageable—with a little help and a lot of labels. If you’re planning a move and want a pro who can guide you every step of the way—from “Just Listed” to “Welcome Home”—I’d be honored to help.
